Health communication research, in particular the design and evaluation of digital and traditional forms of health education materials; electronic survey methodology; public health practice and training the public health workforce.

Cathy Lang, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director for Research Administration for the Office of the Associate Dean for Research, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Community Health Sciences Department, and Assistant Director of the Southwest Regional Public Health Training Center at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Dr. Lang holds a doctorate in public health, with an emphasis in health education and promotion and health communications. Her research interests include electronic survey methodology and evaluating the usage, impact and effectiveness of digital and traditional forms of health communication/education materials. She provides research-related support for faculty, students, and staff at the school. She regularly provides technical consultation for media-related research projects at the school, such as the design/development of a DVD breast cancer education program, website development, and using web surveys for research evaluation. She has considerable teaching experience, including regularly co-teaching a course on health communications that covers the use of computer software programs to create effective health education materials (e.g., image manipulation, developing websites, print materials, and video/audio editing). She is also an Instructor at the Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine, providing a required Introduction to Public Health course for the Master’s program. In her role as Assistant Director of the Southwest Regional Public Health Training Center for the past 4 years, she have been involved with all center activities, including the development of training curricula, assessment and evaluation tools, and conducting full-day training sessions for the Emerging Leaders Workshop series. She is also the Project Manager for several grants that encourage and support disadvantaged students in their pursuit of a degree in public health, as well as the outreach and introduction of potential students to the field of public health.
