Prerequisite courses may be completed while a student is in the doctoral program. Prerequisite completion is not required in order to apply.

Prerequisites for all PhD students

Course(s) may be waived if a student has taken a similar course in the past

  • Biostatistics 100A: Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Biostatistics 100B: Introduction to Biostatistics (continuation of 100A)
  • Biostatistics 406: Applied Multivariate Biostatistics
  • Community Health Sciences 212: Advanced Social Research Methods in Health
  • An epidemiology course

Additional prerequisite for students whose MPH or MS is not in Community Health Sciences

  • Community Health Sciences 210: Community Health Sciences

Addutional prerequisites for students who do not have a MPH or MSPH

Course(s) may be waived if a student has taken a similar course in the past

  • Biostatistics 100A: Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Health Policy and Management 100: Health Services Organization
  • Environmental Health 100: Introduction to Environmental Health
  • Epidemiology 100: Principles of Epidemiology
  • Community Health Sciences 210: Community Health Sciences
  • Community Health Sciences 211A: Program Planning, Research and Evaluation in Community Health Sciences
  • Community Health Sciences 211B: Program Planning, Research and Evaluation in Community Health Sciences (continuation of 211A)

Doctoral Course Requirements

Minimum of 48 units. At least 20 of the 48 units must be in CHS. Prerequisites do not count toward the 48 units. No course may be waived.
  • Community Health Sciences 270A: Foundations of Community Health Sciences 
  • Community Health Sciences 270B: Foundations of Community Health Sciences (continuation of 270A)
  • Community Health Sciences 286: Doctoral Roundtable. Required every quarter until advancement to candidacy. Does not count towards 48 units.
  • At least 4 courses in methods and statistics
  • 4 courses for minor (outside the Fielding School of Public Health)
  • Broad public health course to be approved by advisor via blue petition
  • Additional electives to meet unit minimum
